Stories from building websites
Practical lessons from websites I have built, made useful for the next person. From layouts and copy to cloud operations, these notes distinguish observed results from methods I have developed further.
Start with a question
Keep publishing with control
Built one story, one piece at a time
38 items
Manage media review separately from filenames
Distinguish readiness, review, current references and preview access, including withdrawal scope.
Check partial media responses separately from actual playback
Inspect byte ranges, lengths and version conditions while keeping compressed responses distinct.
Give executable examples their own document
Separate the article from its running example and declare scripts, capabilities and connections.
Preserve the operating version and record the change review
Distinguish baseline, comparison, new material and publication versions for further changes and recovery.
Share the function while keeping each site’s identity separate
Distinguish host routing, resource namespaces, visibility and UI configuration.
Keep working documents outside the public output
Unlinked working material can still be exposed when it belongs to the upload directory.
Match the deployment to the project’s production branch
Connect branch configuration, deployment environment and the actual public address.
Recheck key revocation and account state on the next request
Carry suspension through authentication, operation permission and resource access boundaries.
Choose images by the role of the information
Atmospheric scenes and material used to judge plans, products or places need different evidence.
Read the reference and rebuild the content
Study structure and rhythm, then establish the visitor’s questions, copy and asset evidence.
Explain the example without inventing an achievement
Work structure and decisions can demonstrate expertise without unsupported results.
Make the resource library usable beyond the file count
Review file availability and the path from choosing material to using it.
Publish the body and its discovery information together
Connect one manuscript to its reading page, metadata, language alternatives and sitemap.
Keep registration counts within their evidence
Distinguish defaults, local storage, submission events and a verified aggregate.
Distinguish an example map from place data
Place cards and filters still need coordinates, operating information and maintenance evidence.
Compare moving screens in the same state
Align slide, menu and readiness conditions before judging layout differences.
Let light and dark sections do different work
Define what each section helps the reader understand before changing its background.
Decide what needs its own page
Design the introductory flow alongside destinations people can return to and read in depth.
Classify the material before expanding the menu
Organize the questions that guide selection, and establish what search and filters actually examine.
Change the order when the business changes
Service explanation, calculation and resource discovery need different opening actions.
Begin with the visitor’s next action
The useful page count follows what a visitor needs to understand and do next.
Service terms, explained through customer actions
I put a short, concrete explanation between the service name and the task a visitor wants to accomplish.
A process customers can follow
Before listing internal terminology, I explain who does what and how one action leads to the next.
A path from withdrawal to revision recovery
Stopping public access, recovering earlier content and republishing became separate steps.
Why a growing publication needs a separate index and bodies
I divided the information needed to choose a post from the information needed to read it, then checked that the two stayed connected.
The design to preserve and the material to replace
Copying a finished website gave me a fast starting point. Defining the boundaries made it possible to keep changing that website safely.
Turning useful ideas into a method a client can use
Combine ideas, remove unnecessary parts and add checks that make the method operational.
Three connected questions for a global website
Does it open quickly, make sense to the visitor, and preserve the result they need?
I want to leave a website people can keep changing without me
Turn a useful conversation into an operating method someone else can inherit.
Deleting a backup and being able to recover are different claims
An R2 lifecycle and D1 recovery history are not the same data.
I tested the visitor whose page was not cached yet
The first unfamiliar request revealed limits that a repeat visit concealed.
Reading 64 rows instead of 1,922, while keeping the answer
An optimization needs an unchanged result alongside the faster number.
Before moving toward free, I had to see what kept running
Map the bill to real repeated work before memorizing a limit table.
I consolidated inquiry email, then restored each site's boundary
A recipient is an operational setting and a promise about who receives a customer's inquiry.
A green deployment is not the same as a verified website
Delivery, rendered behavior and external outcomes require different evidence.
Before another retry, I had to understand the permission
Identify the actor, account, resource and operation before changing credentials.
Connecting a domain was never just typing an address
Separate DNS, Pages registration, TLS and redirects before changing anything.
Before the upload, I needed a source I could change again
A downloaded page, a build artifact and an editable project are different things.
